A stakes race in Adelaide has been prefered over an open handicap in Melbourne for spring hopeful Lucky Penny this weekend.
Co-trainer Peter Morgan said Lucky Penny, a first-up winner in Melbourne last month, would go to Morphettville for Saturday's Group Three R A Lee Stakes (1600m) instead of contesting the Wayne Beauglehole Handicap over the same distance at Caulfield.
The lightly raced mare was favourite for the Caulfield race and she is on the second line of betting for the R A Lee Stakes behind clear favourite Linton.
Morgan said the reason for running in Adelaide was to give Lucky Penny a chance to earn more black type.
A Listed winner at the corresponding meeting last year, Lucky Penny will spell after Saturday's race with Morgan hoping the rising five-year-old can measure up late in the spring, possibly in the Myer Classic.
"It's going to be a test for her (on Saturday) but it's time to test her," Morgan said.
"If we are going to have a spring horse she's going to have to be competitive on Saturday."
Trainer John Sadler, meanwhile, said Linton was well-placed under the set weights and penalties conditions where he'll carry 56.5kg.
He won in Listed company last start in Adelaide with 62kg, and if he performs to expectations Sadler will consider freshening him for the Group One Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane.
