Richies Bickies pulls off Rosehill plunge

Saturday 11 May 2013, 3:07pm

Lightly raced three-year-old Richie's Bickies has kept himself in the mix for the Queensland Derby with victory in a benchmark race at Rosehill.

The Chris Waller-trained, Ingham family-owned gelding came out of the pack to land a concerted betting plunge with a narrow win in Saturday's Sportingbet Handicap (1900m) at his fifth start.

It was his second win from his past three starts but Waller said he would probably have to have another race in Sydney to prove he was worthy of a trip north for the Group One Queensland Derby (2400m) on June 8 at Eagle Farm.

"We nominated him but I think I'd prefer to see him have another run in Sydney before we thought about a race like the Derby," Waller said.

"He is a lovely horse. He's a typical Fastnet Rock. He's a lot like his sire."

Backed from $15 to $6, Richie's Bickies beat Queenstown ($8.50) by a head with favourite Laser Flash ($4.20) a nose third after leading most of the way.

Glyn Schofield said he had held up Richie's Bickies for one last crack at the leaders.

"I wanted to make sure I got there late," he said.

"He is a horse who likes something to chase.

"I think in six months' time he will be a really nice stayer but there's only one Derby so it might be worth going there."

The Waller-trained Relaxed And Happy could also head to Brisbane despite being beaten by stablemate Oompa Loompa in the Power Access Handicap (1200m).

Oompa Loompa ($13) crossed from his wide alley to lead all the way while the favourite Relaxed And Happy ($5) missed the start and had to come from near last to get within half a length.

"One horse did everything right and one did everything wrong," Waller said.

"Relaxed And Happy could go to the Queensland Guineas.

"It was a good step up for Oompa Loompa but he's not ready for stakes races yet."
