Tom Sadler gets on the board over jumps

Thursday 9 August 2018, 2:14pm

Tom Sadler has guided Vysotsky to victory at Warrnambool to claim his first win since switching to riding over jumps.

Sadler rode 212 winners, the biggest the Group Three Easter Cup at Caulfield aboard Observational for his father John, on the flat before weight forced him to switch to jumps racing in May.

He was having his eighth ride over jumps in Thursday's Sovereign Resort Maiden Hurdle and guided the Brett Scott-trained Vysotsky to a narrow win.

Scott, was a former champion jumps jockey before turning to training, said he was more nervous watching his horses than when he was riding.

Sadler said he gained the ride after talking to Scott at the Cranbourne trials on Monday.

"He said I've got one for you," Sadler told broadcaster racing.com.

"I'm at the stage where I'm still learning.

"As much as I'm doing my best and riding them as well as I can, they're doing me a favour putting me on good horses."

Sadler said he was also appreciative of the support from fellow riders Tom Ryan and Steven Pateman, Pateman's partner Jess Barton, and jockey coach, former jumps jockey Ron Hall.

"I know it's only a maiden but it means a great deal," Sadler said.

"I'm very appreciative of everyone helping me along the way."

Taking time to recover from the 3200m event, Sadler said the heavy ground made it a tough test.

"This is more of a challenge and more of a buzz but I'm still not knocking anything that I won on the flat either," Sadler said.
