Pat Duff looking for Fasta turf win

Thursday 30 August 2018, 11:51am

Veteran Fasta Than Light is a throwback to a nearly forgotten era of racing but could sneak back into the limelight at Caloundra.

Fasta Than Light will be having his 75th start and is chasing his 14th win in Saturday's Clinic One Handicap (1400m) at Caloundra.

As a younger horse, the now eight-year-old gelding won at Ipswich, Doomben and Caloundra but he has since become regarded as the state's best sand track horse.

His trophy cabinet includes two Gympie Cups, the Gympie Muster Cup and Bundaberg Cup which are all run on sand.

Fasta Than Light has won his past two starts at Bundaberg and Gympie in easy fashion but will be big odds on Saturday in his return to grass.

Trainer Pat Duff is not deterred, believing Fasta Than Light is capable of running a big race on a Caloundra track which has been playing to front-runners.

Duff said Fasta Than Light was a throwback to the old days of the "Creek", Albion Park racecourse which was Brisbane's all-sand track until it was closed in 1981.

"It isn't a surprise he is a like an old Creeker because he was bred by Lyndhurst Stud and his bloodlines are full of those good old Creekers out of the stud," Duff said.

"But his form at Caloundra is good and three runs back he got run down by a nose when second there and he beat good horses like Pressway home. So don't rule him right out."

Fasta Than Light's main aim this campaign will be a third Gympie Cup next month.

Duff has won the Gympie Cup four times including with Papilloma who is well-known in Queensland for starring in the James Mason movie Age Of Consent which was partly filmed at Albion Park.
