Avilius in order for Cup after Cox Plate

Saturday 27 October 2018, 7:18pm

Avilius has thrilled trainer James Cummings with his performance behind Winx in the Cox Plate.

On target for the Melbourne Cup, the Godolphin-owned Avilius finished fourth behind Winx in Saturday's weight-for-age championship.

Avilius shares the third line of betting at $13 with other Godolphin-owned UK stayers Best Solution and Cross Counter in the Melbourne Cup on November 6.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained Yucatan Ire heads the market at $5 with Magic Circle the $11 second pick.

Previous winners of the Melbourne Cup to run in the Cox Plate include Saintly (1996), Efficient (2007), Green Moon (2012) and Fiorente (2013).

"He went terrific," Cummings said.

"He's experienced a high-pressure weight-for-age race for the first time and they don't come any stronger than that.

"He sailed to the line for fourth really nicely and he wanted to go through the gap when Glynn wanted him to.

"It's his first trip to the Valley but he's been to Flemington before and he'll enjoy stepping up in trip next time.

"If that brings him on then that's just where we'll need him to be."
