No retirement decision for champion Winx

Friday 2 November 2018, 9:09am

Winx has come through her historic Cox Plate win with flying colours and will now get the chance to enjoy a break in the paddock before any decision is made on her racing future.

The champion won a record fourth Cox Plate on Saturday at Moonee Valley, stretching her unbeaten sequence to 29, a run that began in the autumn of 2015.

Trainer Chris Waller said the seven-year-old had had a quiet week at his Flemington stable to "chill out and relax" and had been given a clean bill of health after an extensive veterinarian check.

"The latest is we had a meeting yesterday with the owners, myself and (jockey) Hugh Bowman and basically it was just about reflecting on what's just happened and how great a week it was," Waller said.

"She's had a vet check from head to toe, inside and out, and everything came back very well.

"There's been no noticeable changes and the vet is very happy with her condition. You're seeing that in her races and we're seeing that in her body language.

"So the plan is to let all the emotions go, get Christmas out of the way, the horse can kick her heels up in the paddock, which is so important and that's been a big part of her longevity.

"After Christmas we'll get together and have a chat and see where we're heading.

"I don't think there will be any huge surprises but I think the owners deserve, my stable deserves, Hugh Bowman deserves, just a little bit of time for everything to get back to normal because it has been one heck of a ride."

If she does return in the autumn, Waller has indicated it will be in Sydney with the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick a likely farewell target.
