Jockey Michael Cahill believes Sir Moments has earned a shot at a Group One race after his narrow win in The Phoenix at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Sent out favourite, Sir Moments ($2.60) edged past Gypsy Diamond ($5.50) to win by a half-head with Cannyzing ($17) four lengths away third.
Although the gelding's winning margin was slight, Cahill saw plenty of merit in his victory.
"He didn't have things made to order the way the race was run but he was still good enough to beat them," he said.
"I had to go back to last from his wide barrier and his task was made more difficult when they backed off the pace in the middle stages.
"Stepping up to a mile next week will suit him down to the ground."
Trainer Steve O'Dea confirmed Sir Moments will back up in the JJ Atkins at Eagle Farm and he believes the extra journey will be to his advantage.
"He's going up against the A-graders next week but he's definitely earned his opportunity and he'll relish the mile," O'Dea said.
"The bigger track is what he's been looking for and he's bred to handle the extra trip because he's out of a Zabeel mare."
O'Dea is already making plans for Sir Moments beyond the JJ Atkins.
"The spring carnival is something to aim at and a race like the Carbine Club would be an ideal target for him," he said.
