Jockey Chris Munce capped a week of relief when he rode an inspired race to land a massive betting plunge on Sizzling in the Group Two Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Munce admitted he had been relieved on two fronts when Sizzling ($3.80) scored by a long neck to Dances of Stars ($41) with a long head to Lucky Hussler ($26).
He had been cleared of throat cancer, which sidelined him for three months, during the week and his favorite horse Sizzling returned to winning form.
"It really has been a week of relief for me. It was great news about the cancer and for Sizzling to win after he had his knockers was also great," Munce said.
"I didn't think the horse was going bad but the others had caught up. It was the Sizzling of old today and he put paid to them pretty quickly once he hit the lead."
Munce will ride Sizzling in next Saturday's Group One Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), a race he has already won on Dane Ripper (1997) and Landsighting (2000).
Trainer Kelso Wood said he had originally had his reservations about putting blinkers on Sizzling but it had proved a great move.
"I really didn't know if he needed them but I thought he was getting older and it was time," he said.
Wood said he would give Sizzling an easy time this week before the Stradbroke.
The veteran trainer has been upset at times by critics knocking Sizzling for his two defeats from a spell.
"He did get beaten at the Gold Coast and Doomben but the races were not run to suit," Wood said.
Sizzling was backed for a fortune around Australia after as much as $6 was bet on Thursday by corporate bookmakers.
He opened at $4 on course but more money forced his price in again.
Darley runners Academus (fourth) and Complicated (fifth) needed to win on Saturday to make the Stradbroke field.
It means Darley for the second year in a row will struggle to have a three-year-old in the field after star sprinter Mental was beaten in last year's Guineas and missed the Stradbroke.
