Top trainer Peter Snowden will rely on his star three-year-old Epaulette in next week's Stradbroke Handicap despite Galah returning to form at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Galah ($5.50) scored his first win since the VRC Carbine Stakes in 2011 when he got up in the last stride to beat Conservatorium ($17) in the Group Two QTC Cup (1300m).
In a blanket finish, Griffon ($11) was a half head back in third with Border Rebel ($15) a neck back in fourth.
Snowden said Galah would now be set for the Glasshouse Mountains Sprint (1400m) at Caloundra in three weeks.
"That is the right race for him. He is the type of horse who likes to race on the fresh side and the Caloundra race will suit him," Snowden said.
He said Galah had once looked like being a stable star.
"Galah was one of our better three-year-olds but his form went off," he said.
"It has been a while since he has won but the fact is this race was there for him to win," Snowden said.
He pointed out that Galah was unlucky in the Group One Goodwood in Adealide with 56kg and had only 53kg on Saturday.
The decision to not accept with Galah in the Stradbroke at least will ensure one piece of Queensland racing history will remain in tact.
No horse has won the QTC Cup and Stradbroke in the same season since the QTC Cup was first run in 1979.
