First winner as a trainer for Murtagh

Sunday 2 June 2013, 11:11am

Jockey Johnny Murtagh has saddled his first winner as a trainer with Benbecula scoring at Tramore.

Murtagh, who is combining his riding career with preparing horses, only had his first runners last weekend at the Irish Guineas meeting.

Always in the box seat, Ben Curtis kicked for home on Benbecula some way out and the 6-4 favourite beat Lady Imola by six lengths.

Curtis said he was thrilled to be aboard for Murtagh's first success.

"He won well and he's been very consistent," Curtis said.

"He's a grand horse for the future over hurdles. It's great to get a winner for Johnny - his first.

"I ride out for him every morning."

Murtagh tweeted afterwards: "Delighted to get off the mark. Thanks to all involved."
