Hot Snitzel ready to step up in Stradbroke

Tuesday 4 June 2013, 5:45pm

The enigmatic Hot Snitzel has convinced his trainer he is up for the Group One challenge in Saturday's Stradbroke Handicap.

The four-year-old was at his best to win the Group Three Sebring Sprint on April 6 but things have gone pear shaped since.

He went into the Prime Minister's Cup on May 4 as one of the favourites only to run 13th of 16 behind Famous Seamus, an effort that remains a mystery to Gerald Ryan.

Exhaustive tests failed to unearth any problems and Ryan got him ready for the BRC Sprint two weeks later.

On race day Hot Snitzel kicked out in his stall and the toe clip of his shoe went into his foot, forcing his withdrawal.

But a close-up seventh, less than a length from the winner Galah in Saturday's Group Two QTC Cup prompted his owners Triple Crown Syndications to take their chances in Queensland's premier sprint.

"He has improved from Saturday and his coat is looking great again," Ryan said.

"He hadn't had a run for four weeks so he could only get better and I believe he has.

"He's got 54-1/2 kilograms in a race worth a million dollars to the winner. The 1400 metres suits and we're going to run."

Many of the leading Stradbroke contenders were on show at Eagle Farm on Tuesday but Streama was another to avoid the limelight with mare having a light morning workout.

"She made the trip to Brisbane on Sunday so I just wanted her to have a canter," Walter said.

"She is fine form and all I want now is for her to draw a good barrier, preferably between two and seven."

Streama will wear blinkers in the Stradbroke which will be her first start since she finished fourth in the Doncaster Mile on April 20.

She was the first older horse home behind three-year-olds Sacred Falls, Pierro and Norzita in the Doncaster and will take on a crack group of younger horses again.

Sizzling, Your Song, Epaulette and Better Than Ready head the Stradbroke market with the final field and barriers to be declared on Wednesday morning.

Top Sydney mare Arinosa, who has been battling a minor hoof infection, will not run in the Stradbroke to ensure she is fit for the Group One Tatt's Tiara.
