An impressive debut from two-year-old Brand New Choice has provided leading apprentice Chad Schofield with a milestone win at Moonee Valley on Wednesday.
Schofield achieved the feat of outriding his claim as he drove the well-bred daughter of Redoute's Choice through a narrow gap in the straight to take out the Essendon Hyundai I20 Handicap (1000m).
It was 19-year-old Schofield's 80th city win.
"It means a lot," Schofield said.
"I've outridden my claim a lot quicker than I thought I would and that's due to the fantastic support I've received from top trainers. I've got them to thank."
The milestone was all the more special for Schofield because it came on a horse trained by his boss David Hayes.
Schofield moved from Sydney, where he was the champion apprentice, to join the Hayes team at Euroa in Victoria in August.
Although his season has been interrupted by nine suspensions, he is 13 wins clear in the Melbourne apprentices' premiership.
A son of prominent Sydney-based jockey Glyn, Schofield rode his first winner at Newcastle in September 2010 and claimed last season's Sydney apprentices' premiership under the guidance of Rosehill trainer David Payne.
He is set to become the first rider to have won a Sydney apprentices' premiership and also a Melbourne apprentices' title.
With that in mind, he says he will wait until the new season to wind-up his apprenticeship.
"I might wait until the end of the season just so I can secure the premiership," he said.
A proud Glyn Schofield was riding at Canterbury when he heard his son had outridden his claim.
"It's fantastic for him. It's a great achievement for a kid with a lot of desire and a lot of hunger," Glyn Schofield said.
While Schofield has long been tipped as a future top jockey, the young rider also predicted a future for Brand New Choice who won by a length over Magnaro with Mystical Miss another half-length away third.
"She's always from day one caught everyone's eye," Schofield said.
