Family bragging rights will be up for grabs at Flemington when Edgewood and Gail chase victory in separate races on Saturday.
Edgewood lines up in the Listed Creswick Stakes (1200m) for three-year-olds but trainer Robbie Griffiths is more confident about the chances of the gelding's half-sister Gail in the LV Lachal Handicap (1700m).
Edgewood has shown talent in his career, including an eye-catching midfield finish in last year's Sandown Guineas, and Griffiths isn't doubting the gelding's ability.
But he believes the lightly-raced son of Churchill Downs will be better suited when he steps up in distance.
"He's unknown down the straight but you would think his style would suit the big open spaces at Flemington," Griffiths said.
"I do think whatever happens he'll be better as he gets to 1400 and 1600 metres but it's a nice race to progress in.
"And I'm sure if he applies himself to what I know he's capable of, he could easily get amongst the action."
Edgewood is second-up after finishing 10th over 1100m at Caulfield two weeks ago in a race won by Creswick Stakes rival She Can Skate.
Griffiths is prepared to forgive him for that as the pattern on the day favoured horses on speed and near the fence.
Gail hasn't won since the corresponding meeting last year but has been racing consistently, including placings in her two starts at Flemington since a let-up.
"She's more proven and experienced (than Edgewood)," Griffiths said.
"She's drawn awkwardly in barrier 11 but she always runs well at Flemington and I can't see why she wouldn't again."
The Creswick Stakes has attracted a full field of 16 with two emergencies and is the only stakes race on the 10-race program.
