A son of two of the late Dato Tan Chin Nam's former racetrack stars will be out to take another step up when he chases his third-straight win in his Victorian debut at Sandown.
Four-year-old gelding Good Idea is by dual Cox Plate winner So You Think out of 2009 VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume, two of the many big race winners Dato Tan Chin Nam raced in Australia with legendary trainer, the late Bart Cummings.
Wins in a Morphettville Class One over 2014m and a 2100m benchmark race at Gawler at his past two starts have taken the Phillip Stokes-trained Good Idea's record to three wins from nine starts.
Good Idea faces another step up in class to benchmark-78 grade in Wednesday's The Big Screen Company Handicap (2100m) but was favourite on race eve and Stokes believes the gelding is set to run well again.
"He's really come of age this campaign," Stokes said.
"He was always going to be a slow-maturing horse, being by So You Think out of Faint Perfume.
"He used to do a lot of things wrong pre-race and in the run but the penny is starting to drop."
Good Idea races in the black and white check, yellow sleeves, colours made famous by numerous stars raced by Dato Tan over the years, including So You Think and Faint Perfume.
Dato Tan Chin died in October last year but his Think Big Stud is in the ownership of Good Idea along with Dr Alan Jackson who was also a partner in Faint Perfume.
Stokes said it was an honour to have the colours going around on a horse he trains.
Stokes opened his new stables at Pakenham in Victoria late last year while keeping a presence in Adelaide.
He praised the work his team at Morphettville had done with Good Idea.
"They've done a fantastic job, especially (apprentice) Dylan Caboche who has been riding the horse the whole way through," he said.
"I think Dylan and my son Tommy have done a great job back at home because he has been a hard horse to handle."
With Wednesday's race a non-claiming event, Stokes has booked Regan Bayliss.
"He looks extremely well and he's doing extremely well at Pakenham," Stokes said.
"This will be his fifth run this preparation but on face value I can't really fault him."
