Speed star Spurcraft has atoned for a shock first-up defeat but it was the run of second-placed Tumbler that had punters talking after the Open at the Sunshine Coast.

Spurcraft ($3) was beaten first-up at Ipswich as a $1.50 shot but proved too classy over the 1000m on Saturday, beating Tumbler ($5) by three-quarters of a length, with a length to From Within ($4.40) in third place.

The gelding earned the reputation as one of the fastest horses in Queensland during the winter when he took his record to six wins and three minor placings from nine starts.

He was set to go south for the spring carnival but trainer Charlotte White aborted the trip when Spurcraft had a fracture of the offside hind splint bone.

White gave the gelding plenty of time to recover and felt he may have needed the run when beaten first-up.

"I was confident he would improve today even though it was a hot field," she said.

White, who is deputy head of Clifton High School on the Darling Downs, is keen to take Spurcraft south for the autumn carnival.

"I think he would be up to the short course races in Sydney," she said.

White has an extra reason to be excited about Spurcraft because she now has a share in the gelding's sire Jet Spur.

Tumbler was a clear last at the 600m but rattled home to finish second.

The leader time sectional was 33.32 seconds for the final 600m, which means Tumbler ran very close to an outstanding 32.5 seconds for her sectional.

"You can't give starts like that but it was a good run," trainer Barry Lockwood said.
