Colless commitment confirms sound judgment

Wednesday 30 January 2019, 5:05pm

Multiple Group One-winning jockey Glen Colless showed he is still a good judge landing a long-priced winner with his only ride.

Colless surprised when he elected to drive to Ipswich from the Gold Coast for the one ride on Bon Courage ($21) in a maiden race.

But Colless had the last laugh when Bon Courage responded to a faultless ride to score by a half length.

It was Colless' fifth winner since he resumed in mid-December from nearly three months off with a back injury.

"I rode Bon Courage when he was first-up and I thought he would be hard to beat at his next start," Colless said.

"I have been riding a lot of trackwork and the winners are starting to come."

Bon Courage is trained at Caloundra by Kristy Best who has put the gelding over jumps to improve his mental attitude.

Murwillumbah trainer Matt Dunn also pulled the right rein, skipping a race at Eafle Farm on Saturday with Ready For Danger to run at Ipswich.

Ready For Danger ($4.60) was able to stalk the favourite Sunday Session ($2.10) to the home turn before coming away to win by 3-1/2 lengths in the Schweppes Handicap over 2190m.

"This race suited him better. He should have finished closer in the Magic Millions Trophy so that was good form for today," Dunn said.

"He can go back to Saturday class now."

Dunn's luck changed when heavily backed Howick ($2.50) was slow to jump but rattled home from last to finish fourth behind Mystic Eyes ($14) in the Sirromet Handicap (1200m).

Mystic Eyes ended a two-month drought for jockey Tegan Harrison in metropolitan-class races.
