The ups and downs of Josh Adams' career have been testing for the 21-year-old who is hoping to capitalise on a
Randwick winner for his old boss Gerald Ryan.
A leading light in the apprentice ranks two years ago and winner of the Sydney premiership for junior riders in 2010-2011, Adams has been sidelined twice for drug offences but is now concentrating on fulfilling his potential.
His joy at getting Red Excitement home in the St George Motor Boat Club (1400m) was obvious as he claimed the first city winner of his latest comeback.
In a blow-out for punters, Red Excitement ($17) beat topweight Single Style ($18) by half a length with $2.30 favourite Chewychop another length third after having to be re-plated before the race.
"It's been a long road back," Adams said.
"I let myself down but now I am working as hard as I can.
"I ride work six days a week for Gerald and it's really good to get a win on this horse because I know they were a bit disappointed in him last time."
Red Excitement weakened badly after being up on the pace in last month's Scone Guineas won by Taxmeifyoucan.
He settled slightly worse than midfield on Saturday and had plenty in the tank for a final surge to the line.
