Roam ready to fire at Doomben

Thursday 28 February 2019, 1:15pm

Consistent two-year-old Ready To Roam gets a chance to grab some of the spotlight away from his more high profile stablemates when he runs at Doomben.

Ready To Roam is among the favourites for the Saturday's $125,000 Jewel Colts and Geldings Prelude (1200m).

A win will assure him a place in the $500,000 Aquis Two-Year-Old Jewel at the Gold Coast on March 16.

Trainer Tony Gollan has produced half a dozen promising youngsters in recent months which have overshadowed the efforts of Ready To Roam.

The star so far has been Vincere Volare who has won both her starts and will step up to the Group Two Reisling Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday week.

Yet another promising horse by rookie sire Better Than Ready, Ready To Roam ran second to his stablemate Garibaldi in a Doomben trial on January 29.

He was again second to Garibaldi in a two-year-old handicap at Eagle Farm on February 2.

"He was the unlucky runner in that race because he had no luck getting a run at the 200 metres," Gollan said.

"I have had the Aquis Jewel in mind for him all along and Saturday is his test.

Ready To Roam, who cost $37,500 at the Magic Millions March sale, is out of Danehill mare Pilgrim.

Gollan has made an art form of trialling his young horses on Tuesday and running them on Saturday.

He did the same with Ready To Roam this week with the gelding winning without being knocked around.

Gollan will also have a strong hand in the Fillies Aquis Jewel Prelude with Niedorp and Perudo.

Niedorp was second at Toowoomba at her only start but has trialled strongly, also winning her heat at Doomben on Tuesday.

Perudo has had one start for one win over 1050m at Toowoomba last Saturday week.

"They are both promising and I have high hopes for them both," Gollan said.

Brad Stewart will ride Ready To Roam and Perudo while Ron Stewart will be aboard Niedorp.
