Reiby the winning colour at Doomben

Saturday 2 March 2019, 2:13pm

Much travelled gelding Reiby The Red has reignited memories of one of Queensland's most popular horses with a win in the Lazy Yak Plate at Doomben.

The Les Kelly-trained 7-year-old ($5.50) held on in the straight to score by a half head to Drumadoir ($4.60) over 1600m.

Reiby The Red races in the colours of the Mumford family who had star Queensland sprinter Consular nearly 20 years ago.

Consular cost only $20,000 but went on to win 16 races and more than $ 1 million in prizemoney.

Reiby The Red is no Consular but he has been racing consistently since joining Kelly at the Gold Coast with two minor placings before Saturday's win.

"He got beaten a nose and a nose at his last start and things went better for us today. I will look for longer races for him now," Kelly said.

Reiby The Red has campaigned in country, provincial and city NSW and north Queensland during his 45-start career.

The race was delayed when favourite Surprise Bullet was scratched when he refused to load into the barriers.

Stewards ordered him back to barrier practise.
