Hugh Bowman gives up Canberra rides

Sunday 10 March 2019, 5:21pm

Hugh Bowman will be back in the saddle soon after forfeiting rides at Flemington and Canberra because of a family illness.

Bowman left Flemington on Saturday before the Australian Cup to fly back to Sydney when he found out his wife Christine was ill and needed medical attention.

He was due to ride favourite Avilius in the Cup with the horse subsequently fifth in the 2000m-race won by Harlem.

On Sunday, Racing Victoria stewards said they had again spoken to Bowman who told them his wife was recovering.

He gave up rides at the Black Opal meeting in Canberra but will be back in the saddle from Monday.

Early on Saturday afternoon, Bowman partnered Godolphin mare Alizee in a race day gallop ahead of Saturday's $5 million All-Star Mile at Flemington.
