Adelaide's in-form Kennewell stable, left to rue a missed opportunity with Conservatorium, expects its Brisbane winter carnival fortunes to improve markedly at Ipswich on Saturday.
Group One-placed two starts ago, Conservatorium couldn't force his way into the Stradbroke Handicap field when he was made a reserve for the $1.36 million race.
Gary Kennewell and his son Lloyd were hoping Conservatorium would secure a Stradbroke start so the five-year-old could capitalise on a return to top form.
"He's going the best he's gone in a long time," Lloyd said.
"His form speaks for itself at the moment ... he's right in the zone."
That assessment augers well for the chances of Conservatorium scoring a consolation win in the $175,000 Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich.
It also gives the Morphettville stable, in the money at Flemington on Saturday with spring possibility El Magico, a serious chance at claiming an important Ipswich Cup day double.
The Kennewells will also start last year's Adelaide Cup winner Rialya in the $200,000 Ipswich Cup.
Rialya did enough to please the stable at his first Brisbane start when beaten 2-1/2 lengths in the Premier's Cup at Doomben after making the pace.
"I thought his first run up there was very good and the Ipswich Cup is the race he's been set for all preparation and I reckon he can win," Lloyd said.
The Ipswich Turf Club received 220 nominations for its feature meeting of the year, including 26 in the Cup.
Among the the more high-profile Cup entries is Peter Moody-trained import Voila Ici.
Voila Ici's best result in nine Australia starts has been his Group One Underwood Stakes placing but more recently there have been promising signs in his two Brisbane runs.
There are 29 entries for the Eye Liner Stakes with the 2009 Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready and accomplished sprinter Startsmeup set to join Conservatorium at the top of the weights for the Listed sprint.
The meeting will also feature the Gai Waterhouse Classic, a Listed race for fillies and mares which has attracted 25 nominations.
