Soil testing starts on troubled Ipswich

Wednesday 20 March 2019, 11:44am

A major test of the Ipswich racetrack's soil and foundations has begun which should ensure the best way to solve problems that have plagued the club.

Ipswich has lost five meetings in recent months despite there being little or no rain.

Problems have arisen with the drainage system which are believed to have been exacerbated by the underlying clay base.

The club's next meeting is on Friday week and it is scheduled for two more meetings in the following fortnight.

Racing Queensland has sent staff to Ipswich to help solve the problems.

"Geotechnical testing is currently being undertaken at Ipswich the results of which will show the best way forward," an RQ spokesman said.

He said the testing was on the entire track which should prove invaluable knowledge on whether remedial work or a full reconstruction was needed.

The spokesman emphasised there was no danger to the Ipswich Cup meeting in June which provided 90 per cent of the club's annual income.
