Peter Moody will consider backing up stablemates Aliberani and Mumbeilly at Moonee Valley after the pair fought out the finish of a race at Sandown on Wednesday.
Moody accepted with the duo for Saturday's Adapt Australia Handicap (1600m), several hours before Aliberani defeated Mumbeilly by a half-neck in the BMW Handicap (1800m) on a heavy track at Sandown.
"Obviously it was testing conditions today so I'll go home and have a look at things," Moody said.
"The thing that probably gives me a bit of heart is that they didn't have a hard gallop. They went very soft early and sprinted home.
"But at the same time I wouldn't want to commit myself until as late as Saturday morning."
Moody said the fitness of the mares would be in their favour if he did decide to run them against each other again at Moonee Valley.
"You would never consider backing up horses that might be a bit soft in condition but both mares are very hard in condition, and wet conditions will probably prevail again on Saturday," he said.
Aliberani was ridden to victory by apprentice Jake Duffy on Wednesday with Moody's number one stable rider Luke Nolen on Mumbeilly.
The jockeys will be reversed should the mares clash again on Saturday.
