Our Libretto on path towards Brisbane Cup

Thursday 9 May 2019, 5:45pm

Fresh from a midweek double at Sandown, trainer Grahame Begg is hoping to parlay that success into a stakes victory at Doomben.

Jamie Kah rode Global Sanction and Vanuatu to win on Wednesday and she will team with Our Libretto in the Group Three Chairman's Stakes at Doomben.

The three are owned by Jonathan Munz and prepared by Begg at Pinecliff stables on the Mornington Peninsula.

Our Libretto will be Begg's sole runner on Saturday while Kah also rides Smart As You Think in the Listed Members Handicap and Dollar For Dollar in the Group One Doomben 10,000.

Begg is targeting the Group Two Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 8 with Our Libretto.

"She runs Saturday, then two weeks into the Premier's Cup over 2200 (metres) at Eagle Farm and then into the Brisbane Cup," Begg said.

Following a win at Caulfield on April 6, when ridden by Kah, Our Libretto finished sixth in the JRA Plate at Randwick on April 20 under Damian Lane who is currently riding in Japan.

Begg said the Randwick race did not pan out the way he had hoped.

"It was a slowly run race," Begg said.

"She was back last and he tried to circle the field turning for home and got run off her legs.

"The winner cut back inside her and pinched five lengths turning for home and her run was very good.

"The horse that finished beside her (Abdon) went out and won the Wagga Cup, so the form has worked out."

Following the Brisbane Cup, Begg said the mare was likely to remain in Brisbane to spell in the warmer climate before returning to Melbourne to prepare for the spring.

Stablemate Miss Siska, seventh in last week's Hollindale Stakes on the Gold Coast, has been turned out after tweaking a joint.

"She's going to go out for a break but will be back for the spring," Begg said.

"It's only a minor thing but just enough for us to pull up stumps for now."
