J J Atkins poser for Garibaldi

Sunday 26 May 2019, 2:13pm

Trainer Tony Gollan is debating whether to run BRC Sires' Produce Stakes placegetter Garibaldi in the Group One J J Atkins Stakes.

Garibaldi led for most of the race before finishing third to Strasbourg in the Sires at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Gollan believes while the run may have indicated Garibaldi would struggle at 1600m in the Atkins he is not so sure.

"He wanted to over-race a bit in front and he was still fighting on near the line," Gollan said.

"That isn't really his go. He is better sitting just off the pace and he does have an explosive finish."

"I will see how he is in the next few days and make a decision then."

Garibaldi has now earned just under $100,000 and will have no trouble making the Atkins field.

Co-trainer Peter Snowden is keen to pay an Atkins late entry fee for Strasbourg who finished strongly at the end of 1400m.

He said he was keen to run Strasbourg in the Atkins provided he did well in the next few days.

Strasbourg raced in winkers for the first time and he settled better than in previous races.

Prince Fawaz is the new Atkins favourite $4.50 after his win over Reloaded at Randwick on Saturday.

Reloaded and his Chris Waller-trained stablemate Accession, second in the Sires, are on the second line at $5.

Co-trainers Will and Peter Hulbert will look for reasons for the failure of Oh Five Glory who beat two runners home in the Sires.

They will have blood tests taken and have her examined by a vet on Monday.

"She is much better than that," Will Hulbert said.
