Robert Heathcote says it makes sense to miss the Tattersall's Tiara with in-form mare Fire Up Fifi.
Heathcote believes he has made the right call to start Fire Up Fifi in Saturday's Centenary Mercedes-Benz Mile instead of the Group One Tiara.
"In some respects it was a tough call to miss the Tiara but also a common sense decision," he said.
"Clearly she's a better miler than a seven furlongs horse and we're also looking further afield to a race like the Myer Classic in Melbourne."
It isn't the first time Heathcote has taken a conservative approach with Fire Up Fifi during the winter carnival.
He elected to forego a start in the Group Two QTC Cup and Fire Up Fifi scored an easy win in the Spear Chief Handicap at Listed level the same day.
"We found the right race for her that day. She had the softer run and won," he said.
"While it would've been exciting to have a runner in the Tiara, you go where you can win.
"Too many people have lofty ambitions or stars in their eyes when common sense should prevail."
Heathcote was pleased with the mare's effort to finish fourth in the Dane Ripper Stakes on June 8.
"Glen Boss said if he'd ridden her before and knew her he would've gone earlier and could've won had he done so," he said.
"He said she hit a flat spot for about 150 metres and it was only the last 50 metres that she got going so to be beaten less than a length by Red Tracer was a good effort."
Heathcote said the five-year-old would be at a weight disadvantage against Red Tracer in the Tiara after their Dane Ripper clash when she was getting 4kg from the Chris Waller-trained mare.
