Tarzan defends Sunshine Coast sprint title

Saturday 29 June 2019, 1:52pm

Tough gelding Tarzan defended his title of King of the Sunshine Coast sprinters in style but may have to head interstate for his next start.

Tarzan ($4.40) made light of top weight of 59.5 kgs and a heavy track to take his record at the Sunshine Coast over 1000m to nine wins and four seconds from 14 starts.

He sat three deep the whole way but came away to beat stablemate Misery ($5.50) by three lengths in the XXXX Open Handicap (1000m).

Trainer Stuart Kendrick is now scratching his head about where to send Tarzan for his next start.

"He is going to get the grandstand in a Sunday or midweek race at the Sunshine Coast over 1000m at his next start," Kendrick said.

"I think the Sunshine Coast suits him because it is a big track and he can get balanced after the start. One option is to give him another go at Eagle Farm."

"Maybe he can head to Grafton for the Kirby Quality or Ramornie Handicap on a big track. But I will have to think about it."

Kendrick, who has his sixth Sunshine Coast premiership sewn up this season, has trained 11 winners for June.

He trains Tarzan for a syndicate including Brisbane Racing Club chairman Neville Bell.

"Neville might like to run the (Group One) Stradbroke at the Sunshine Coast over 1000m," Kendrick joked.

Jockey Luke Tarrant, who rode Tarzan, is scheduled to start a month's suspension on Sunday night for betting.

But he is seeking an internal review of the decision arguing someone else had opened an illegal account in his name.
