Ron Maund fined for assaulting stewards

Tuesday 9 July 2019, 5:17pm

Veteran Queensland trainer Ron Maund has been fined $2000 with no conviction recorded on charges of assaulting two Racing Integrity officers.

In the District Court in Toowoomba on Tuesday, Maund, 75, pleaded guilty to one count of serious assault while armed and one count of serious assault.

The court heard the two officers from the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission went to a property on November 14, 2017.

There was a confrontation between the pair and Maund who grabbed a can of engine degreaser and sprayed it towards the men.

The court heard Maund accepted some went near one steward's eyes.

Maund's barrister Frank Martin said his client had been asleep when the officers arrived and had been startled.

Martin said there had been a long animosity between Maund and one of the stewards.

He said Maund had sincerely apologised and he had a long history as an outstanding member of the racing industry.

He said thankfully there had been no serious injury.

Judge Greg Koppennol fined Maund $2000 and did not record a conviction.

QRIC Commissioner Ross Barnett said sentences were a matter for the courts but the case showed assaults on stewards and integrity officers would not be tolerated.

Maund has been a trainer for more than 50 years with his best horses, Group One winners Gold Edition and Ice Chariot.
