The wetter the better for Spensierato

Instead of being a player at the recent Brisbane carnival, Spensierato will run in a late season winter race at Caulfield.

A dual winner from five starts, Spensierato will attempt to back up a Cranbourne victory with success in Saturday's VOBIS Gold Reef (1600m).

Trained by Nick Ryan, Spensierato scored on debut at Pakenham last November and after one more outing was sent for a spell.

She began her second campaign in March, and Ryan had plans to take her to Brisbane with the aim of contesting the Queensland Oaks.

But those plans had to be abandoned.

"After her second start at Sandown she got really sick and didn't come up in her next campaign," Ryan said.

"So we had to be patient. I was looking at getting her to Queensland this year, so it's good to see her back where I thought she could be."

While many are hoping the predicted rain bypasses Caulfield, Ryan would like to see as much as possible.

Spensierato is unbeaten in two runs on heavy tracks and Ryan says the rise in distance to 1600m will not pose a problem.

"She's by Fiorente out of a Sadler's Wells mare and the further the better you would think," Ryan said.

"She's a nice progressive filly who was good winning last time and the more rain the better.

"It's a big step up, it's a strong race with some good form in it, but with the Super VOBIS bonus, it's a good opportunity."

Ryan has enjoyed a good season. He has 15 horses in work and is looking forward to the coming spring.

He hopes Spensierato can graduate to better company and join the likes of Mahamedeis, Express Pass and Blond Ruler as spring contenders.

"We're very hands-on. The model is small, hands-on, a boutique operation," Ryan said.

"We're certainly in a better position now than we were this time last year."
