Prioritise can bring Tregea change of luck

Friday 9 August 2019, 3:01pm

Toowoomba trainer Steve Tregea is hoping for a change of luck at Doomben after spending more time than he wanted at the veterinary clinic this week.

Tregea is coming off one of his best seasons with his "Three Musketeers", Bergerac, Niccanova and Prioritise all performing well in top company.

Bergerac won the Mackay Cup at his last start but has since pulled up sore.

"He must have done something to himself in the Mackay run and he has been at the clinic for them to have a look at him, "Tregea said.

"To make matters worse I have also had to take a yearling which is closely related to Niccanova to the clinic as well."

Tregea believes his luck might change with Prioritise in Saturday's Kelly Schweida Open Handicap (1600m) at Doomben.

Prioritise was fifth to favourite Silvera in the Listed Tattersall's Mile at his most recent start when they met at set weights.

"The handicapper has given Silvera 59kg which means even with a claim he has 57kg,on Saturday," Tregea said.

"I am claiming as well with Michael Murphy so we meet him 2.5kg better on Saturday."

Prioritise has won 10 races from 1000 to 2000 metres but is generally considered best around the 1600m mark.

"He handles Doomben and even from out wide at the start he shouldn't be far away for in the run," Tregea said.
