Steve Smith might be sidelined but Australia's leading batsman has something to celebrate with Hogmanay's win in the Taree Cup.
Smith is suffering the effects of concussion after being hit with a ball in the Second Test at Lord's.
The cricketer is part-owner of the Chris Waller-trained Hogmanay who backed up a Rosehill win with victory in Sunday's Taree Cup under Tommy Berry.
The win was an emotional one for Berry whose grandmother comes from the area and was admitted to a local hospital two days earlier.
"It gave me a great thrill," Berry told Sky Thoroughbred Central.
"My Nan's from Old Bar just across the road and I promised her I'd win her a Taree Cup some day.
"Dad and I popped in to see her so we'll drop the trophy back to her."
Hogmanay started the $2.70 favourite and beat Mongolian Wolf by three-quarters of a length.
