Jockey Reece Wheeler is hoping the winter emergence of smart filly She Can Skate and untapped stayer Star Rolling can be his ticket to spring carnival success.
Wheeler has enjoyed recent city wins on both horses and combines again with She Can Skate at Moonee Valley on Saturday with the filly favourite to make it three straight victories this campaign.
What makes riding She Can Skate even more special for Wheeler is that the three-year-old is trained by his father Geoff.
She Can Skate gave Geoff Wheeler his first city winner at Caulfield last month and backed it up by providing the trainer with his first stakes win at Flemington in the Listed Creswick Stakes three weeks ago.
Reece Wheeler is confident the filly can maintain momentum in Saturday's Simpson Construction Handicap (1200m) before attention turns to the spring.
"Obviously she's something to look forward to every time she goes around," Wheeler said.
"Especially being for the family, it's great.
"You look forward to a horse like her coming along."
And while She Can Skate is the horse that will carry Wheeler's hopes in his only ride on Saturday, an impressive Flemington win last weekend from the Peter Morgan and Craig Widdison-trained Star Rolling has Wheeler excited about the future.
Wheeler, whose biggest win has been the 2002 Tristarc Stakes on Reactive, said he hoped Star Rolling could contribute to a bumper spring.
"He's very raw and very lightly raced but I think he's very talented," he said.
Wheeler is convinced She Can Skate is better racing around a bend compared to the straight at Flemington, where she won narrowly last start, and doesn't see Moonee Valley being a problem.
She Can Skate is the $2.60 favourite while Listed winner Octavia is on the second line of betting at $7.
"As long as she hasn't gone backwards, and at this stage she doesn't appear to have, there's no reason I shouldn't be confident going into a race like that," Wheeler said.
