Fab's Cowboy to make Birdsville debut

Sunday 1 September 2019, 10:02am

Prolific winner Fab's Cowboy will race on his 30th Queensland track when he contests the iconic Birdsville Cup.

Fab's Cowboy is one of 23 nominations for Saturday's $40,000 Cup (1600m) which is again expected to attract a crowd in the thousands for the outback meeting run on dirt.

The Bevan Johnson-trained gelding won his 32nd race at Roma last week after being the equal most prolific winner in Australia with nine victories last season.

Fab's Cowboy has raced on 29 Queensland tracks in his 72 start-career.

He has run on tracks from Cairns in the north to Goondiwindi on the southern border to Longreach in the west.

He will be making his first visit to Birdsville with the meeting to be shown live on Sky Channel on Friday and Saturday.

Adelaide trainer David Jolly will also make the 2400km trek north with Fulton Street who will be ridden by Terry Treichel.

Racing Queensland chief executive Brendan Parnell said the two-day meeting on the edge of the Simpson Desert was now an international event with tourists coming from widespread areas to attend.

"The nominations for the meeting have been excellent with 23 in the Cup and 18 for the Open sprint. We expect betting interest in the meeting to be very good," he said.

"The meeting is now a fully funded TAB country meeting."

The Birdsville Cup was first run 137 years ago and is one of the oldest races in Queensland.
