The Victoria Racing Club has revamped the third day of Melbourne Cup week, combining a later start with less time between races.

Known as Ladies Day, the VRC Oaks day meeting at Flemington will commence at 1.50pm, instead of 12.15pm in previous years, with the final race to run at 6.25pm.

The day's feature, the Oaks, will be run at 5.50pm while the usual 40 to 45 minute gaps between races will be cut to between 30 and 35 minutes intervals.

VRC executive general manager of racing Leigh Jordon said the club wanted to point out the day wasn't broken as it was the fourth highest attended race day in Australia with healthy wagering turnover.

"It didn't need too much surgery," Jordon told RSN927.

"Things have changed as people used to easily get the day off.

"We thought if we shift the day back a bit we give people the chance to go to the office in the morning, work until lunch, and then go to one of the great race days conducted on the calendar."
