A determined peformance from three-year-old She Can Skate at Moonee Valley on Saturday has continued the Wheeler family's dream run with the filly.
She Can Skate, ridden by Reece Wheeler and trained by his father Geoff, gave Geoff his first city win at Caulfield last month and has since backed it up with a Listed win at Flemington and another hard-fought victory in Saturday's Simpson Construction Handicap (1200m).
"That was a gutsy win. Wow, I thought we were gone," Geoff Wheeler said.
"It's very exciting.
"She'll go out for a break now and she'll come back for the spring."
She Can Skate, the $2.90 favourite, was challenged all the way up the straight and looked in trouble but fought bravely to defeat the resuming Octavia ($4.60) by a nose with a half-neck to Nadeem Lass ($12) third.
Spring targets remain up in the air for She Can Skate but Reece Wheeler suspects the rising four-year-old will return for the back-end of the carnvial.
The jockey said his winter fortunes had turned around with the performances of She Can Skate and also the emerging stayer Star Rolling in recent weeks.
"I've gone from having a pretty mediocre winter to all of a sudden lobbing on a couple of pretty nice three-year-olds," he said.
