Harrison's fortune changes with late ride

Saturday 14 September 2019, 1:01pm

Jockey Tegan Harrison pondered the ups and downs of racing after she picked up the late winning ride on Highway at Doomben on Saturday.

Harrison was booked to ride Boncosta in the Spicer's Retreat Handicap (1600m) but gelding was scratched on race morning.

She picked up the ride when Ryan Maloney was unable to make 54kg on Highway ($4.80).

"It really has been a funny week. I thought Boncosta would be very hard to beat but the trainer decided to scratch him because he thought the track would be soft," Harrison said.

"But it was always going to be good. I was having breakfast when my manager rang to say I had picked up the ride on Highway.

"I wasn't going to have any problems with the weight because I had food poisoning during the week."

Harrison did the rest in style with a copy book ride to land Highway a 1-3/4 length winner over Ready Set Boom ($6) who led.

Highway is now trained by Tony Gollan after originally being with Steve Englebrecht in Sydney where she won two races.

Harrison and Gollan had a lot of luck a few years back with horses such as Group One performer Temple Of Boom.

"I have won a lot of races for Tony but this was the first one for a while," she said.
