Anthony Cummings looking to a second Derby

Sunday 30 June 2013, 4:39pm

It might be more than four months away but Anthony Cummings believes he has found the horse to deliver him a second successive Victoria Derby.

The Randwick trainer has begun assembling his spring carnival aspirants, several of whom are already back in work at his Randwick stable.

Among them is promising colt Drago who Cummings has earmarked as his main contender for the Victoria Derby at Flemington in November.

An eye-catching fourth in the Group One Champagne Stakes during the Sydney autumn, Drago scored a resounding four-length victory in an 1800m race at Rosehill in May.

Cummings' 2012 Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar could finish only third in the corresponding race 12 months earlier.

The trainer is yet to determine a spring program for Drago but his lead-up options include traditional Derby springboards such as the Spring Champion Stakes in Sydney.

Fiveandahalfstar took a less conventional path, winning a maiden and a benchmark race in his two starts before his Classic victory.

"It's a matter of what fits along the way. There are different ways of going about getting there these days," Cummings said.

"But the aim is the Victoria Derby."

Also returning to stable life is Magic Night Stakes winner Scandiva.

From the same family as Black Caviar, Scandiva was Group One placed in the Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) before tiring to finish ninth when stepped up to 1600m in the Champagne.

"She will be kept to shorter trips," Cummings said.

"I'm not sure she'll go to the mile this time around, although you don't need a strong miler to win the Flight Stakes.

"We might even keep her fresh for the Coolmore (Stud Stakes)."

Canonbury Stakes winner Never Can Tell is also being prepared for an early spring tilt, along with progressive fillies Missy Cummings and She's A Fox.

This week will be an important one for Fiveandahalfstar who will undergo a veterinary inspection on his injured fetlock.

The gelding scored a brilliant win over older horses in The BMW before succumbing to the problem which ruled him out of the Australian Derby.
