Apprentice shortage threatens race

Wednesday 3 July 2013, 4:01pm

A significant oversight has emerged ahead of Saturday's Flemington meeting and it could cost owners and trainers the chance of a city win.

The Rising Stars Final, a race restricted to apprentice jockeys, has 13 intended runners but only 10 city-class junior riders are available.

Trainer Mick Kent, one of those caught out by the shortage, wants to allow non-eligible apprentices a one-off special exemption to ride in town.

"They've bent the rules before and they're doing it in other areas on Saturday," Kent said.

Kent, who has St Mark entered for the race, said he wanted to book Omer Ay, but he isn't eligible.

The situation is exacerbated by the Rising Stars Final being the only event on the eight-race card in which apprentices can claim, a situation which has led to some taking a fuller book of rides at out-of-town meetings.

A number of other apprentices, including the in-demand Katelyn Mallyon, are suspended making the situation more difficult.

Kent, who landed a winner at Caulfield on Wednesday with Gold Heist, called on stewards to investigate the situation and allow all acceptors to take their place in the field.

All eight races on Saturday's program are series Finals, including the $150,000 Winter Championship (1600m) which has attracted a final field of 13 horses.

Included among them is last-start winner The Cleaner and the Michael O'Leary-trained Glaneuse who will be chasing his third successive victory in the race.

The All Victorian Sprint Series Final (1200m) has also drawn a handy field headed by Group Two winner Sea Lord.
