Quality not quantity key for Waterhouse

Thursday 4 July 2013, 3:19pm

Runners are light on for holidaying trainer Gai Waterhouse at Rosehill but the stable says it has more than enough horsepower to compensate.

Unbeaten two-year-old Bull Point and Civic Stakes runner Under The Sun make up a select Waterhouse team for what could be a bittersweet meeting for Tulloch Lodge on Saturday.

"We've had good numbers the past few weeks and while we've only got two runners on Saturday, they're both really good chances," stable spokesman Mark Newnham said.

Waterhouse is in second place on the trainers' table with 77 winners in 2012-13, less than half the total of premiership frontrunner Chris Waller.

And while she is 5-1/2 winners ahead of third-placed Peter Snowden, Waterhouse faces the prospect on Saturday of having the Sydney trainers' record she shares with her father Tommy Smith broken by Waller.

Bull Point is tipped to run an odds-on favourite in the Australian Turf Club Handicap (1200m) after a come-from-behind Randwick win on debut.

As a son of Fastnet Rock out of a city-winning mare, it seems Bull Point is blessed with the ability to match his pedigree.

"If he wins on Saturday he could stay in work and be aimed at something richer," Newnham said.

Civic Stakes contender Under The Sun gives French jockey Thomas Huet a chance at stakes success.

"Thomas gets on really well with him, the horse relaxes really well for him," Newnham said.

With Huet in the saddle, Under The Sun made his own luck in benchmark company at Randwick last start but he is a $4.60 second favourite to make a successful transition to stakes racing.
