The experience of half a century in racing set trainer Ken Sweeney apart from some of his more excitable colleagues as he digested the success of his talented sprinter Riziz at Flemington on Saturday.

"We'll look at a couple of those Group Three sprints over the next few weeks," Sweeney said.

"He's a very nice horse, but I'm not getting carried away. You can't be disappointed if you do it like that."

Sweeney rated Riziz good enough in the autumn to run in Adelaide's premier sprint, the Group One Goodwood Handicap, in which he finished a luckless seventh.

He then lowered his sights to the Gold Topaz at Swan Hill last month which Riziz won by three lengths.

The slightly more ambitious goal of Saturday's Listed All Victorian Sprint Series Final (1200m) fitted perfectly into Sweeney's plans for a horse who is clearly above average.

"You can get carried away at this time of the year," Sweeney said.

"He's a nice little horse and he likes it a bit soft. He'll show us in time how good he is."

Ridden perfectly by Paul Gatt, whose mere presence on the horse was a tip in itself, Riziz started a well-backed $2.35 favourite and scored a comfortable 1-1/4 length win over Livigno ($31) with Nicholls Court ($17) a short neck further back in third place.

Gatt came to Melbourne as Adelaide's leading jockey, but while he was planning Riziz's win at Flemington, he lost the premiership lead to Jamie Kah.

The perseverance of trainer Darren Weir was rewarded in the day's other feature with the win of injury-prone gelding Magnifique Soleil.

"This a real tribute to everyone at our Warrnambool stable, they've put a lot of work into him," Weir said.

Magnifique Soleil has suffered three tendon injuries and has had two stem-cell treatments to resolve the problem.

"The owners have never given up on him, they deserve this," Weir said.

Magnifique Soleil ($5) relished the fast pace in the Listed Winter Championship (1600m), coming from near last to score by a short head from Clanga's Glory ($11) with a short head to Another Prelate ($5) in third place.
