Howmuchdoyouloveme ready for biggest test

Friday 19 October 2012, 2:40pm

Exactly one year ago, Con Karakatsanis labelled Howmuchdoyouloveme potentially as good as anything he had trained following a debut win in a midweek race in Sydney.

And now, as the lightly-raced galloper prepares to make his first appearance on the big stage at Melbourne's spring carnival, Karakatsanis has no reason to change his opinion.

Howmuchdoyouloveme has won four of his five starts including a dominant Listed Ramornie Handicap success at Grafton and is favourite to make a winning return in Saturday's Group Two Caulfield Sprint (1100m).

"He showed from a young age he was going to be good," Karakatsanis said of the $5000 purchase.

"His four wins have really impressed me and this is his acid test on Saturday. Hopefully he's as good as I think he is."

Karakatsanis, who trained Black Piranha to win two Stradbroke Handicaps, said Howmuchdoyouloveme was probably as good as he could get him for a first-up assignment but warned there was still plenty of improvement in the four-year-old who is on a path towards the Group Two Salinger Stakes (1200m) and possibly the Group One Patinack Farm Classic (1200m).

Howmuchdoyouloveme is at $3.10 in a field which includes Stradbroke Handicap winner Mid Summer Music, former Hong Kong sprinter Green Birdie and talented sprinter Thankgodyou'rehere.

"It's a very winnable race for him but no race is easy, especially a Group Two," Karakatsanis said.

"There's a Stradbroke winner in there, Group One winners in there, so it's not going to be easy. But it's a good race to kick him off in."

As Karakatsanis pointed out, Howmuchdoyouloveme has things in his favour and things against him on Saturday.

But the trainer is hoping the positives outweigh the negatives.

"It's his first time in this grade, his first time racing in Melbourne and his first time at Caulfield," the trainer said.

"But the positives are that he's shown what he can do, he makes his own luck, he's a high cruising speed horse, and he's a winner. He's won four from five and I think that goes a long way for any horse."
