Gelagotis conduct quizzed by RV stewards

Saturday 16 November 2019, 5:50pm

Racing Victoria stewards have adjourned an inquiry over trainer Peter Gelagotis' alleged conduct towards a veterinary official at Sandown.

Gelagotis was incensed Levendi was required to trot up before vets 45 minutes before the horse ran in the Group Three Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) on Saturday.

Veterinary staff then attempted a pre-race blood test on the five-year-old which they were unable to complete with Gelagotis required to keep Levendi on course for three hours after racing to take a blood sample.

The Kevin Heffernan Stakes was Levendi's first race since winning the 2018 Australian Derby at Randwick after spending time on the sidelines courtesy of surgery for a knee chip which was followed by a fractured pelvis.

A $41 chance, Levendi finished last of the eight starters in the race won by Teleplay.

Evidence was taken from Gelagotis, his racing manager and brother Manny, vets Dr Jamie Wearn and Dr Paul Martin .

It was alleged Peter Gelagotis raised his voice and was aggressive towards Wearn which Gelagotis denied.

Gelagotis said a lot of work had gone into Levendi's return to racing.

"I was emotionally involved, but aggressive or offensive, I don't think I was," Gelagotis said.

RV stewards have adjourned the inquiry to a later date.
