Gold Fields to campaign in Dubai

Monday 18 November 2019, 12:19pm

Sandown Stakes winner Gold Fields is being set for a campaign in Dubai.

Gold Fields gave Stephen Baster a winning farewell win in Saturday's Group Three Sandown Stakes with the jockey now retired and beginning a new career as a real estate agent.

The victory was trainer Logan McGill's first Group win and he and the gelding's connections plan to take him to Dubai in January when the annual carnival begins in the lead-up to the World Cup in March.

Mornington-based McGill is unsure whether Gold Fields will have another start in Melbourne beforehand.

"We'll just see how he is and let him get his head down on the grass for a few days," McGill told RSN927.

"The long-term plan is to go to Dubai with him in January. It's a little bit down the track now but if he doesn't have a run in between now and then, so be it.

"We'll just see how he is and see how the calendar looks if it is going to pan out for him to have another one in between now and then.

"If not we'll just give him a trial and he'll head to Dubai.

"The races that he's going to go over for I think they're about $80,000 American to the winner. And that's not too far off what he was racing for the other day."

He said they were also keen to try Gold Fields on the dirt.

"We're told that his racing pattern and everything would suit that,." he said.

"So if he happens to have a liking for that then that will take him to another level over there.

"But we'll just let him tell us. It's going to be very exciting and I'm really looking forward to it. It's going to be a really good experience."

Seven-year-old Gold Fields has won 11 of his 46 starts including three of his past four.
