Chicago Bull breaks maiden at Toowoomba

Wednesday 20 November 2019, 4:41pm

Expensive colt Chicago Bull looked certain to be beaten before breaking his maiden status at Toowoomba in an effort jockey Jim Byrne felt was a lot better than it appeared.

It was a long way from Chicago Bull's first start when he ran third in the Group Three Maribrynong Plate at Flemington.

Chicago Bull, a son of top sire Exceed and Excel, cost $400,000 at the Inglis Easter Sales and after originally being trained by Peter Gelagotis in Victoria he was sent to Tony Gollan at Eagle Farm where he has now won and been minor placed twice in three starts.

Byrne took Chicago Bull ($1.45) straight to the lead but he was headed by Barrail in the straight before fighting back to win by a long head.

"It is very hot today and he did fight back well in the straight. I don't like leading here (Toowoomba) when you have to come up the hill (into the straight)," Byrne said.

"There is better to come from him."

Gollan had a double when another of his former southern horses in Deladies Boy was heavily backed into $3.20 before winning a Class 3.

Deladies Boy won two races for the Snowden training partnership in Sydney before joining Gollan last month.

Trainer Robert Heathcote continued his wonderful association with the stallion Mossman when Mosshiki ($1.50) won a maiden In a canter.

Heathcote has trained the winners about 50 races with horses by Mossman with the most notable being the seven time Group One winner Buffering.
