The immediate past and the potential future of Victorian jumps racing are set to battle out Sunday's Grand National Hurdle at Sandown.
Last year's winner Brungle Cry and his stablemate and 2011 National champion Black And Bent represent the experience with the "newcomers" Wells and Macedonian the up-and-coming pair in the $200,000 event over 3900m.
The quartet are among eight Grand National nominations with the same number, headed by the Ciaron Maher-trained Bashboy, entered for the Crisp Steeplechase on the same program.
The Kathryn Durden-trained Wells announced his presence among the jumps racing elite with victory in the Kevin Lafferty Hurdle at Warrnambool last Sunday week, a race in which he ended the 11-win streak of Black And Bent.
In that race Black And Bent, who finished fourth, carried 72kg and Wells 64kg with Macedonian third, also with 64kg.
The Grand National weights and the extra distance should put Black And Bent back into contention.
Bashboy is looking for a sixth-straight success over fences in the Crisp, run at set weight with penalties, also over 3900m.
