Something about Ballarat Cup day gels with Hawker Hurricane with the gelding winning at the meeting for second year running.
Hawker Hurricane won the Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic 12 months ago at his debut outing, and he returned to the track for the first time since to claim victory in Saturday's Magic Millions 3&4YO Classic.
Ridden by Jordan Childs, Hawker Hurricane ($13) defeated the $2.30 favourite Li'l Kontra by a long-neck with Akkadian ($18) a length away third.
Hawker Hurricane had been placed in stakes races earlier in the spring and the Mike Moroney stable was confident of a good showing.
"He had been mixing it with some strong form lines over the spring carnival and the horse had been extremely well at home," Moroney stable spokesman Jack Turnbull said.
"He just needed the right run in transit today to secure the win."
Turnbull said Hawker Hurricane may head to the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) on January 11.
"He's had a few runs this campaign but we can easily freshen him up and head there if he's right," Turnbull said.
Childs said Hawker Hurricane had been racing consistently and deserved his victory.
"I was always confident a long way out he was going to be able to hold them off and that he did," Childs said.
