Star NZ galloper set for Caulfield Guineas

Wednesday 10 July 2013, 6:06pm

One of New Zealand's most spectacular youngsters is to head to Australia for a campaign in which connections are hoping ambition will be matched by ability.

Cauthen, who scored by 8-1/2 lengths on debut at Te Rapa earlier this month, has the Caulfield Guineas in his sights in the spring.

Trainer Andrew Campbell said the Darci Brahma colt may have one more run at home if he can find a dry track.

If not he will begin a spring program in Melbourne next month.

"He's having a bit of a breather at the moment and we could go straight to Australia with him, Campbell said.

"The Caulfield Guineas is the one we've planned for right from the time we first had him in."

Cauthen will be joined in Australia by Group Three Wellington Stakes winner Weissmuller who will be tested in regular Saturday company in Melbourne before a spring goal is finalised.

But if he runs up to Campbell's hopes, he will be entered for the Cox Plate.

A brother to the Gai Waterhouse-trained stakes performer Travolta, Weissmuller hasn't raced since he was unplaced in the New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie in March.

Trainer John Bary, meanwhile, will bypass the Melbourne spring with his handy four-year-old Survived, a stakes placegetter in Brisbane this season.

Bary has selected the Australian Cup at Flemington in the autumn as Survived's next major goal.
