Abbott gets dual trainer-jockey licence

Wednesday 18 December 2019, 1:17pm

Eagle Farm trainer Lauren Abbott has joined the ranks of dual licence holders in Queensland.

Abbott, who trains a team of 10, has been given her jockey's licence to ride in races.

As a former jockey in Victoria, North Queensland and Brisbane. Abbott rode about 300 winners before retiring.

Abbott rides most of her own horses track work and in barrier trials.

"My son Harry is four now so it frees me up a bit more to ride in races, initially on a limited basis," she said.

"I am a natural lightweight so at least that solves looking for lightweight jockeys. Most of my riding will still be done by senior jockeys like Jim Orman."

Abbott's sprinter Stryke One nearly pulled off a big-priced upset when third in a three-way photo finish at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

She has high hopes for Stryke One and new stable acquisition Ignite the Light who she rode to win a Doomben barrier trial on Tuesday.
