Peter Gelagotis set to face TCO2 charges

Wednesday 18 December 2019, 4:40pm

Trainer Peter Gelagotis is facing three charges over an elevated TCO2 level taken in a pre-race blood test from Strong Influence at Sandown.

Racing Victoria stewards allege that before Strong Influence raced on June 26, Gelagotis administered, or caused to be administered, a prohibited substance for the purpose of affecting the performance, or behaviour of the horse.

Stewards also charged Gelagotis in the alternative, the detection of an elevated TCO2 reading above the allowed 36 millimoles per litre in plasma threshold along with taking Strong Influence to race at Sandown with an elevated TCO2 reading.

Mount Gambier-based Jenny Gow-Whyte faces three charges after Soul Fire returned a urine sample containing cobalt above the permitted 100 micrograms per lite threshold.

Soul Fire was pre-race tested before running third at Geelong in August 2018.

Gow-Whyte has been charged with administration of a prohibited substance to affect race performance, administration of a prohibited substance before or after running in a race and having a prohibited substance taken from a horse at a race meeting.

The trainer is facing a further charge as stewards also allege Gow-Whyte injected Soul Fire with 6ml of Pentosan on June 4 before the horse raced at Warrnambool the next day.

The charges against Gelagotis and Gow-Whyte will be heard by the Victorian Racing Tribunal.
