Kelly Schweida wants to prolong the career of injury-prone sprinter Cape Kidnappers.
That's why he favours spelling the gelding rather than extending his campaign following his win in the Hardy Brothers Jewellers Handicap (1010m) at Doomben on Saturday.
Schweida has resurrected the gelding's career which was in jeopardy when he cracked his off-fore sesamoid bone last year, sidelining him for more than 12 months.
"His legs have been really good and we don't want to tax him too much," he said.
"Another little break would settle them right down."
Schweida and the punters who backed Cape Kidnappers from $1.60 into $1.45 favourite experienced some anxiety when he was caught four wide in the six-horse field with Jim Byrne aboard.
Byrne admitted he was worried about the reception he would receive from Schweida if Cape Kidnappers had been defeated.
"I dropped my hands on one of his horses at Ipswich and got beaten a nose a while back. Kelly was green that day," Byrne said.
Agitate, the $4.80 equal favourite, and Little Bit Ditsy ($7) provided Schweida with the quinella in the following race, the Breakfast Creek Hotel Handicap (1200m).
Jockey Glen Colless has a high opinion of Agitate but says the colt needs to learn to relax.
"I came out with a set plan to snag him at the start and ride him from behind but when he jumped three-quarters of a length in front I was a bit worried," he said.
"I put the anchors on straight away but he wanted to over-race in the middle stages and when he dragged me round the turn I just let him run."
